Chinese duo breaks in Wimbledon

by Alfred Johnson

Li Na and Zheng Jie became the first Chinese players to reach the third round at the All England Club.
This Chinese pair has made it to penetrate the third round at Wimbledon Grand Slam after knocking out a ninth seeded Swiss/Aussie mixed double.

Chinese number one Li, playing here for the first time, now faces former US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, the Russian fifth seed, for a place in the last 16. Meanwhile, Sun Tian-Tian and Peng Shuai made sure of their places in the second round.

Its the second time the duo has booked position in the last 16 at Grand Slams after the first time during the Australian Open back in January.

There are six women from China in the top 100 and all of them were in the main draw. On the other hand, the top Chinese man is Wang Yu actually ranking at position 353.

The 20-year-old, who played the first round on her debut here in 2004, splits her time between Florida and China and is convinced the Olympic doubles gold medal success of Sun and Li Ting in Athens in 2004 will spur even more Chinese women to take up the game.
