Drying out Soggy Shoes

by Bill Hinson

Think of an occasion, and you are sure to find a shoe specifically made for it. Such is the variety of shoes available in the market. Dancing shoes, dress shoes, casual shoes, running shoes, basket ball shoes, wedding shoes, office shoes, skating shoes, women shoes and many more – find them in an array of designs, colors and sizes. Each pair is designed for you to look good and feel your best on any occasion. But justifiably, they also call for some of your time and attention. Take care of your shoes, and ensure that you enjoy their comforts and good looks for years.

To maintain your high quality leather shoes, you need to regularly clean the dirt from them with bristle brushes, and wipe them with soft polishing cloth. Any leather can be polished and conditioned with a leather lotion applied with a soft cloth. Ensure that you use the leather polish of the right shade. Suede leather looks best when brushed. You may however, depending on the type, use natural polish that can enhance their looks and give them the trademark suede sophistication.

Sometimes, shoes need a wash to get the build up of mud and clay off them. Or sometimes your shoe gets wet in the rain or snow. Walk around in the shoes for a little while, to help force the water out. Take the in-soles out, let them drain and then stuff with newspaper. Replace the first lot of paper after a couple of hours. Do not make the mistake of suddenly exposing them to high temperatures in a bid to dry them quickly, i.e. do not dry them near heat. This can ruin your shoes, as heat can delaminate the shoe and shrink the midsole. The best way to dry them is to leave them at room temperature or leave them exposed to the sun.

Shoes made of soft leather benefit greatly for shoe keepers. These are wooden, shaped blocks, which are inserted in the shoe, and help it to retain the shape. You can also spray your shoes with strain guard if you use them frequently. Stain guard is an excellent way to protect your shoes from water, snow, mud, and spills. Spray your shoes before wearing and on a regular basis thereafter.

Most shoes stores, where you can buy reputed brands such as Nike, Florshiem, Metro, DKNY, Reebok and Puma shoes among others, stock every item that you may require for the maintenance of your shoes. Ensure that you buy shoe care products, even when you buy the shoes. Remember, when your shoes are well maintained, they reflect your smile!
