A stick-and-ball game played by two teams, each of 11 players; also known as field hockey, especially in the USA. The object is to move the ball around the field with the stick until a player is in a position to strike the ball into the opposing side's goal. The playing area is 100 yd (91 m) long and 60 yd (54 m) wide. A game lasts 70 minutes, split into two 35-minute halves. A similar game to hockey was played by the ancient Greeks c.2500 BC. Modern hockey dates from 1875, when the English Hockey Association was formed in London. Indoor hockey is increasingly popular during the winter months.
