The racing of finely tuned motor cars, which can either be purpose-built or modified production vehicles. The most popular form of motor racing is Formula One grand prix racing for high-powered purpose-built cars which can average well over 240 kph/150 mph. A season-long world championship (Mar–Nov), involves usually 16 races at different venues worldwide. Other popular forms include Formula 3000, Formula Three, rallying, sports car, Indy car racing in the USA, Formula Ford, hill climbing, and production car races. Safety precautions are very strict in all countries where racing takes place. The first race was in 1894, from Paris to Rouen; the first grand prix was the French, in 1906. Past famous races include the Mille Miglia in Italy and Targa Florio in Sicily. Current famous races include the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race, the Monte Carlo Rally, the Paris to Dakar Rally, and the Indianapolis 500.
