[pilahteez] An exercise-based system that aims to develop the body's ‘centre’ in order to create a stable core for all types of movement; named after its deviser, German gymnast Joseph Pilates (1880–1967). Originally referred to as contrology, the method tones, stretches, and mobilizes the body through regular sessions, so that the body's structure realigns and a balance is achieved within the muscular-skeletal system.
