Tamiflu Precautions How perilous can it be
by

Tamiflu – the brand name for generic drug oseltamivir – has become an overnight global rage with the advent of its effectiveness against avian influenza virus prevalent in many countries of east and Southeast Asia. Besides being a neuraminidase inhibitor for the general treatment of influenza, Tamiflu is considered as the only effective medicine in patients suffering from the human form of avian bird flu H5N1 virus.
But the patients must beware that Tamiflu is a prescription drug and should never be taken as an OTC drug. Online Tamiflu is also available but it must be resorted with caution and after proper medical approval. Consequences of misuse could be costly.
Tamiflu Dosage and Over-Dosage Roche Laboratories, Inc. – the manufacturers of Tamiflu – suggests a strict following of Tamiflu dosage, which is normally twice daily (once each in the morning and evening) unless prescribed otherwise by your GP. The full course of 10 capsules must be completed even if the patient is feeling fine after a few doses of Tamiflu.
Tamiflu over-dosage may result in nausea and vomiting. Therefore take the missed dose as soon as you remember within 2 hours and continue with the normal dosage thereafter. Do not forget to consult your GP in case of over-dosage and missed-dosage (after 2 hours).
Tamiflu Precautions Tamiflu is not free from side effects. Therefore there are general precautions that must be taken while using Tamiflu. These include –
•Pregnant or planning to be pregnant women must take Tamiflu at their own peril as the effect of the drug on the unborn child is not known. Some of the studies done on animals have observed birth defects after using Tamiflu.
•If you are breastfeeding a baby, take the drug after proper consultation with your doctor because it is not known if the drug passes into the breast milk.
•Tamiflu can be hazardous if the patient is allergic to any of its ingredients.
•Tamiflu is not a substitute for annual flu shot as prescribed by the doctors. At best, it prevents the spread of influenza in other parts of the body if taken within 48 hours of first occurrence of symptoms.
•The efficacy of Tamiflu has also not been established with patients already suffering from cardiac and respiratory disorders.
•Rare cases of anaphylaxis and serious skin reactions have also been reported in certain cases.
•The safety of the drug has not been studied for infants below 1 year of age.
•Health researchers also fear the occurrence of Tamiflu-resistant influenza virus by the overuse of Tamiflu.
•Tamiflu is effective only against influenza type A or type B.
•Other known side effects of Tamiflu include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, headache, gastric disorder, cough or respiratory problems.
The Bottomline – Take Tamiflu at your own peril!
