Trade Your Job for Dream Work

by Laurel Donnellan

"It is never too late to be who you might have been." - George Eliot

It will take courage to trade your job for dream work.

If you are committing to doing the work needed to identify and go after your dream work, you are a visionary. Visionaries will complete a deep process that excavates their hopes and dreams. Visionaries trust the possibility that they can create a future which includes Dream work, even when they are facing uncertainty. People doing this work are sometimes concerned about health issues, relationships, finances and/or their ability to transform interests into meaningful work. Visionaries embrace these challenges as part of the journey.

This transformational journey is not for the faint of heart. Courage is the foundation of the change that will take place if you choose to do the work of what I call The Path to Remarkable Work. I used to believe that once dream work was clear, the road to creating it would be easy. I have found the opposite is often true. It is as if the universe tests the resolve of those who follow their heart. This process will require facing yourself, your beliefs and other people courageously.

Here are three things you can do to begin your journey to discovering and realizing Dream Work:

1. Spend time with other people who have dreams and support each other on going for it!

2. Make a list of people that you know that have made courageous career choices and call them up for advice and encouragement.

3. As yourself the question "What have I done in the past that was courageous and how can I use this experience to support this journey?

4. Ask yourself the question: "What would I do if I was guaranteed not to fail?"

All visionaries have one thing in common: they have been or are currently on a search for work that is aligned with their personal values and natural talents. Before you can have dream work, you need to do the work involved in having a new dream.
